The philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte, who taught in Jena and later in Berlin, was a staunch opponent of Napoleon. In winter 1807/08, he delivered 14 addresses to the German nation in French-occupied Berlin. These speeches ― compiled as one of the key documents of the Wars of Liberation ― aimed to promote a sense of national identity and a German nation-state.
