The Rheinische Merkur was a highly respected German newspaper in this period and cemented Joseph Görres’s reputation as a political journalist. Görres had founded the publication himself to fight for a unified German nation. After Napoleon’s defeat, he agitated for a German state with a federal constitution, leading the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III to ban the paper in 1816.
